The Aga Khan Foundation in Syria seeks to employ a Project Officer - Gender Equality- Tamkeen for its office in Salamieh.
Tamkeen Project aims to empower vulnerable adolescents and youth across multiple governorates by equipping them with the tools, skills, and services needed to thrive in educational, social, and economic spheres. Through non-formal education programs, vocational training, and life skills development, the project
enhances their capacity to actively participate in community-building and working life. By fostering innovation, promoting volunteerism, and providing safe, inclusive learning spaces, the project enables participants to contribute constructively to their communities while advancing their personal, educational, and professional aspirations.
The Project Officer, Gender Equality is responsible for ensuring that gender equality principles are mainstreamed across all AKF Syria programs during concept note development project design,
implementation, monitoring and evaluation and documenting evidence and lessons learned on gender-sensitive and gender-responsive programming. The position will work closely with a range of teams, particularly with Partnerships, Grants, Programs, Communications and AKDN/AKF’s Gender Focal Points in Syria and globally. The incumbent will report directly to the Gender Coordinator.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide technical support to staff on gender-related issues and ensure that gender considerations are mainstream in project planning and implementation.
- Support the program teams in integrating gender considerations into project design to meet donor and internal requirements. This includes commissioning and conducting gender analyses, as well as developing gender-sensitive and gender-responsive activities.
- Ensure that program indicators and M&E tools and methodologies are gender-sensitive and gender-responsive.
- Ensure gender equality standards in project deliverables and provide guidance on enhancing and advancing AKF Syria program engagement and activities related to gender equality and women's empowerment.
- Review and provide advice on the Gender and Age Markers and Gender Equality Markers for projects, particularly at the design phase.
- Conduct training sessions and workshops to enhance the capacity of staff and stakeholders on gendersensitive approaches and best practices.
- Support the monitoring and evaluation of projects from a Gender lens and ensure alignment with AKF Gender policy and donor requirements.
- Review, provide inputs, and write sections for the project reports in close coordination with project and grant teams.
- Coordinate with partners and stakeholders to promote gender issues and enhance program impact.
- Assist in the development of communication materials by documenting findings and lessons learned, success stories and best practices of the project, and drafting relevant materials for dissemination.
➢ Safeguarding focal point:
Act as the primary point of contact for mainstreaming the safeguarding/PSEA into the project cycle. This
includes but not limited:
- Conduct regular Safeguarding/PSEA training sessions for staff, partners, and associated members.
- Conduct regular safeguarding/PSEA risk assessments for project activities, particularly for children and vulnerable groups, to identify the potential risks, set mitigation plans and indicators, and follow up on the implementation of the mitigation plan.
- Coordinate with the Safeguarding Coordinator for all received concerns of SEA and Safeguarding to meet the donor requirements and adhere to AKF policies and procedures.
- Collaborate with partner organizations, and community leaders to ensure community-level safeguarding awareness and adherence to AKF standards.
CROSSCUTTING RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the Gender Coordinator to:
- Provide support in the implementation of the Gender Equality Scorecard's Roadmap.
- Support AKF Gender advocacy plan in reviewing and applying initiatives on international events such as Women's Day and 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence.
- Represent AKF Syria at AKF’s Global Community of Practice for Gender Equality during monthly and annual meetings.
- Contribute to discussions on resource mobilization; financial and human resources for gender integrations in various processes at AKF, S.
SUPPLEMENTARY FUNCTIONS:
- Explore opportunities to undertake gender equality training, and other capacity development efforts including for the members of the Gender Working Group, and cascade knowledge and training to AKF and AKDN staff as relevant.
- Collaborate with the Gender Coordinator at supporting the design, implementation, and analysis of gender assessments.
- Contribute to discussions on resource mobilization; financial and human resources for gender integrations in various processes at AKF, S.

- The applicant must have a university degree in Social Science, Humanities or Law.
- At least 3-5 years of experience in the humanitarian sector, gender and development.
- Demonstrated experience in project management, proposal development, or monitoring and evaluation.
- Demonstrated experience/interest in gender-focused and women's empowerment programs.
- Familiarity with the gender context, national gender machinery, national legislation framework and policies on gender equality and women's empowerment in Syria.
- Ability to work extensively in the field and travel throughout Syria and the Middle East (as applicable)
- Good sense of personal initiative, problem-solving skills, teamwork, creativity and innovation
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Good analytical and communications, facilitation and presentation skills
- Knowledge and commitment to safeguarding
- Fluency in written and spoken Arabic and English
